QUESTIONS FOR CAREER CONVERSATIONS

Questions by Year of Study
  • For first year undergraduate or graduate students:
  • What aspects of the transition into university life/your studies have you enjoyed?
  • Which ones have you struggled with?
  • What have you learned about yourself?
  • What kinds of part-time or summer jobs interest you right now? Why?
  • Do you know about the Career Centre? Have you visited or met any of the staff?

For students in the middle of their studies:
  • What do you know about university now that you wish you had known in your first year?
  • What do you enjoy about university now that was challenging in your first year?
  • What have you learned about your career goals from your classes and co-curricular involvement?
  • Are you noticing any connections between your classes and your co-curricular activities?
  • What are you thinking about doing to explore your career goals?
  • Who do you want to meet and talk to that could help you find a summer job or internship?
  • Who do you want to talk to with your questions about the career(s) you’re thinking about?
  • Have you had your resume and cover letter checked at the Career Centre?

For students in their final year:
  • How are you feeling about coming to the end of your studies?
  • What do you want to do to get ready for life after graduation?
  • What career options are you seriously considering?
  • Who can give you more information about those options?
  • What Career Centre events or programs have you attended to help you with your search?

Questions on the Classroom
  • What has your favourite class been so far? Why has it been your favourite beyond the fact that  you ‘really liked the teacher?  What did you learn about yourself in this class?
  • What has been your least favourite class so far? Why has it been your least favourite beyond the  fact that you ‘really didn’t like the teacher’?  What did you learn about yourself in this class? 

Questions on Co-Curricular Activities
  • What organizations or clubs have you gotten involved with on campus? What made you join that organization? What was it about that club that interested you?
  • What are you doing with the organization? What are you enjoying about it? What are you not enjoying about it?

Questions on Career Paths
  • Are there any career fields that you have started to think about? If so, what interests you about them? How are you thinking about getting started?
  • What career fields do you want to learn more about?
  • How can I help or support you in this process?
