Welcome to Steps-Forward

The BC Initiative for Inclusive Post-Secondary Education

Check out our Newsletter
We partner with Post-secondary institutions in BC to co-create Inclusive Post-secondary Education Initiatives that support belonging for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities, in the academic and social life of their campuses.

Mapping Student Diversity

Students supported through Inclusive Post-secondary Education enroll in programs of studies that they choose based on their passions and career interests.  This map demonstrates the diversity of programs that students have pursued over the last 20 years in BC, and challenges assumptions about the educational futures that students with intellectual and developmental disabilities want and can access for themselves.

Thanks to Sam Mason, Department of Geography at UVic, for creating the map!

The aim of Inclusive Post-secondary Education is not to normalize students with intellectual and developmental disabilities, but to make their participation in post-secondary education the norm.

Students are supported to enroll at the university or college of their choice, pursue studies and engage in student life in the same classes and places as any other student.

Our goal is to for students experience the full breadth of university life.  We engage across campuses to build capacity for inclusive campus communities.

There are no minimum academic or behaviour requirements to be a student . Applicants are interviewed and accepted based on their desire to continue their education and to pursue an inclusive life.

These studies are recognized by the college or university with a Certificate of Completion awarded to students at Convocation alongside students earning a credential in the same program of study.

The opportunity to pursue an equitable post-secondary education is transforming campus communities and creating better life outcomes for students who have historically been denied access to this level of education.
